Tostada de Aguachile.

Aguachile literally means “Chili Water”. The dish consists of raw shrimp (they cook in the high acidity of the lime juices). a lot of lime, enough to drench all the shrimp, some red onions and a lot of diced serrano peppers and cucumbers. Some recipes will have cooked and raw shrimp to give more variety in texture.

The only thing I know is that I’d love to visit Tokyo because I really like big big cities. Ideally I’d have a good traveling partner or someone to visit (but since I don’t know anyone who currently lives in Tokyo that well a traveling partner seems more realistic). Not that I dislike traveling alone, but it depends on the place and the mood of the trip (if that makes sense). I’ve actually been talking with my friend Hrefna about possibly going together in 2014. She went before and loved it and says she has a whole list of things she still wants to do / check out there so that seems ideal… going with someone chill and cool who will make the agenda so I can just kinda tag along and soak in experience hehe. Basically what I wanna do is:

Go with a friend

eat

eat

eat

drink

shop

eat

eat.

and yeah I wanna eat ALL THE FOOD but I guess to name some faves: tonkatsu, gyoza, ramen, udon, yaki soba, sashimi, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, onigiri, curry rice, tea, tea, tea, sake, beer, whiskey, drinx, drinx, drinx.

smilinghooks:

I know most people do not like reading about illness. I even find it a drag… I have a small digital pile of articles on illness that I mean to get to ASAP but every time I think about them it’s like “ugh” because I’d rather just pretend that nothing is wrong with me or at least try not to think about it.

anyway, I’m glad I read that article “right away”… for the second time someone sent it to me, because it is the most spot on writing, on a version of my illness, that I’ve come across (I’ve got crohn’s, earlier diagnosed as ulcerative colitis, entire colon removed, multiple surgeries, etc.)

since that article was reeeally long I’d like to give you some of the lines that resonate the hardest with me:

“There is a lot of shame associated with disease. Disease is not polite conversation, and at my age, a career—not wellness—is the expected goal.

I want to valorize my time in ways that have nothing to do with work, to say a big “fuck you” to every person at a dinner party who has ever pointedly asked me, “So…what do you do?” because I haven’t “done” much in a long time.

In “The Autoimmune Epidemic,” Donna Jackson Nakazawa writes, “Forty-five percent of patients with autoimmune diseases have been labeled hypochondriacs in the earliest stages of their illnesses. Some of this, no doubt, has to do with the fact that 75 percent to 80 percent of autoimmune disease sufferers are women, who are more easily dismissed by the medical establishment when hard-to-diagnose symptoms arise.” […] Often, the identities of people with invisible disabilities do not fit neatly into either disabled or able-bodied communities.

Biomedical treatment operates on a capitalist understanding of time. Rather than embracing the regenerative powers of the body, the idea is to get back to work as quickly as possible. It is the body’s radical autonomy that resists commodification. To spite our optimal productivity, it gets sick. Sickness can be masked and treated but the body responds nonetheless. It reacts. It may take longer to recover than is convenient to your boss. We do not have time to get you better. We have time to make you functional.

They didn’t understand that this experience had stripped and shed a light on me, making it simply impossible to carry on as before. There was no return to “normal.”

Sexuality is the right of those designated as “healthy” in our culture. A quick scan of contemporary popular culture suggests that aside from the most able-bodied (white, straight, cis-bodied, and of means), it is repulsive and “unnatural” for the sick, the disabled, or the elderly to talk about or openly engage in sexual conduct.

Expectedly, I developed feelings of guilt over my inability to be a productive member of society: moralizing my disability as sloth, viewing my body’s natural limitations as personal failure.

I spent most of my time on the Internet, probably as bored as you were at work. For many chronically ill and disabled people, the Internet is an invaluable social space. I was bed-bound and it became my life. Nerds have lived virtual lives since the advent of virtuality, but for those of us whose physical bodies can seem like a burden or an ontological prison, the Internet functions as a utopia of sorts.”

How to be a Person in the Age of Autoimmunity

How to be a Person in the Age of Autoimmunity:

A twentysomething—living with three autoimmune disorders—on bodies under capitalism, productivity, and her own experience in biomedical purgatory.

kiss me

kiss me

miss u mudkip

miss u mudkip

☆ ⊂((・▽・))⊃ ☆

I love my blog I luv u blog I love all my blogs

can’t stop.

can’t stop.

Photo

What's it like studying Japanese while living in a country with only a handful of Japanese people? All my teachers are japanese people. beyond that I don’t really know any japanese people in Reykjavík, although I know there’s a handful around (I’ve maybe met 1 or 2 briefly). And then I have a couple of new friends who are japanese exchange students at uni of iceland, but they’re leaving to go back home soon.

At first I thought you were going to ask me “what’s it like to study japanese while living in a country that is getting to a point of being “sensationalized” by the rest of the world almost as much as japan is (although on a smaller scale of course)”. That’s something I think about more than trying to meet japanese people in iceland I guess. Iceland is just so fucking kawaii we can’t help it.
